This is a nation removed Blessed, geographically separate from the rest A life raft adrift from the follies of war with solitary peace enough to prove We really do hate the poor I don’t talk to my friends about houses no more it’s not a score I’m willing to wave in the face Of the raced out, the paced out The working all day knowing their sweat will never pay out what they need As they see their dreams of stability accelerate steadily Towards the current event horizon effortlessly Then have that critical mass broadcast their every fault live on talkback That boomer box that mocks their plight But I’m breaking bread man, I’m lucky I’m living that Kiwisaver depleted First home grant diminished Minor bank of mum and dad Investments tapped, drained away Hope never another rainy day dream Still living that dream So how dear I snap back from my ivory stack Office employed, white collared The privilege tattooed on my pigment-less skin Imagine a place where the weak were all strong Our soldiery braver than bravery told A country’s good soul only challenged in pride By its cultural unity, it’s beauty inside It’s a fantasy, they call us Scandinavia of the south And honestly, i dunno Maybe it’s the mountains and maybe it’s the economy And maybe it’s the suicide rate, I think it’s mythology There is no depression in New Zealand, like Blam Blam Blam We’re pioneering people children, one culture all holding hands We live in a place where all weakness is wrong And the poor all deserve what they’re served With that headstrong belief they’re all taught To have children’s the way to a wage only white people pay That’s the flat white flavoured boast They use to wash down this first home fucking weight in avocado and toast man But I’m breaking bread, still lucky Still living that Kiwisaver depleted First home grant diminished Minor Bank of mum and dad Investment tapped, drained away Hope never another rainy day dream Still living that dream So how dear I snap back from my ivory stack now Office employed, white collared The privilege tattooed on my pigment-less Imagine a place where the weak were all strong Our soldiery braver than bravery told A country’s good soul only challenged in pride By its cultural unity, it’s beauty inside Imagine a place where the weak were thought beast To burden, to labour, to punish repeat A country’s good soul only challenged in pride by its capital gains Untaxed, undivided Imagine a place where your birth date must mean You lumber or struggle along only seen As lazy, or industrious and just maybe We were never as egalitarian as we mean.

about

A punk and metal and friends compilation to raise support and awareness to end greyhound racing, and the associated abuse, killing, and dumping, in Aotearoa New Zealand. A more comprehensive info zine is included with your download.

Any proceeds go to the Greyhound Protection League of New Zealand (GPLNZ).

THE PROBLEM

The New Zealand government has been conducting independent reviews of Greyhound Racing New Zealand (GRNZ) for the last decade. With major concerns around animal welfare and transparency unresolved, and suggestions for change ignored, in 2021 the government gave the industry until the end of 2022 to “demonstrate meaningful improvement in areas of concern or face closure”.

The follow-up review was handed to the government by the Racing Industry Board (RIB) in December 2022, showing multiple ongoing failings by GRNZ to address the concerns raised in the 2021 Robertson review.

The Labour government, and the racing minister, Kieran McAnulty, has now stated that they cannot make a decision before the election. We need the New Zealand public to know how long GRNZ has been given second chances for, and that they have been on notice, without consequence, since 2021.

Meanwhile greyhounds continue to die on track, or are discarded in their hundreds for the New Zealand public to rescue and pick up the bill for the injuries and mental trauma sustained during their ‘career’. And as GRNZ clamps down on euthanasia (putting a bullet in unprofitable dogs has become damaging for their image, as public awareness grows), we face a rehoming shortage, with the number of discarded hounds waiting for forever homes set to increase by hundreds annually. Phasing out the greyhound racing industry, and rehoming all the current greyhounds, will be hard and take work, but we have to do it now! The problem compounds every year as more racing greyhounds are bred than can be rescued by the Aotearoa public.

The download/tape comes with a more comprehensive insert, outlining the history, the issues, the statistics, common questions, and exposing some of the absolutely fucked behaviour that is tolerated by the greyhound racing industry, the government, and by the Aotearoa public.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

Spread the word.

You can email your racing minister, Kieran McAnulty (kieran.mcanulty@parliament.govt.nz), and your local Labour representative, and tell them that delaying this decision is hurting their chances of re-election. They waste taxpayer money with every review, and erode voter trust with every broken promise and obvious delaying tactic. Only 9% of the NZ public believes that greyhounds lead “a good life” (Camorra Research Report, October 2022). If you’re reading this in the future, and Kieran successfully delayed making this decision and has now been replaced, email the current racing minister/political party.

SAFE and SPCA conduct some very effective public campaigns against greyhound racing. Look them up on your platform of choice.
